The Book: All the President's Men

All the President's Men by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward

This book is the starting point for the books, web site links, and videos that follow. I've read it at least 4 times since 1990, and I'll probably continue to re-read it every few years. Here you can read my Unruly Reader review.

All the President's Men was published in 1974, shortly before President Richard Nixon resigned the presidency.

The good folks at Simon & Schuster will let you read the first several chapters online.

The Journalists: Woodward and Bernstein and the Washington Post

Biographies/Autobiographies

Woodward and Bernstein: Life in the Shadow of Watergate by Alicia C. Shepard

This dual biography of Woodward and Bernstein provides fascinating detail about their writing of All the President's Men, and also describes the impact of the Watergate investigation on their lives.

A Good Life: Newspapering and Other Adventures by Ben Bradlee

The lively autobiography of the editor-in-chief of the Washington Post. He was a buddy of Jack Kennedy way before the Watergate complex was even built. So the guy's got stories.

Personal History by Katharine Graham

The frank autobiography of the publisher of the Washington Post; this book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1998. She was a formidable woman, but she didn't start out that way. A great story.

Herblock: A Cartoonist's Life by Herbert Block

The autobiography of the Washington Post cartoonist whose Watergate cartoons became legendary. The Washington Post's Watergate site includes a display of Herblock's Watergate cartoons.

Washington Post

The Washington Post has a wonderfully detailed web site about Watergate, which gives an overview of the Watergate scandal and its coverage by reporters, biographies of key players, a Watergate timeline, and links to other documents and sources.

Also included: video and audio clips, document images, and Herblock's cartoons.

Woodstein Archives

The Woodward and Bernstein Watergate Papers are archived at the Harry Ransom Center of the University of Texas at Austin.

On the web site, you can see Woodward's handwritten notes after his meetings with Deep Throat, outlines and notes related to the writing of All the President's Men, notes from Katharine Graham to Woodward and Bernstein... and much, much more!

The Sequels: The Final Days and The Secret Man

The Final Days by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein

The second book, picking up where All the President's Men left off. This book has a very different tone, however. Unlike the mystery/thriller/thrill-of-the-chase feeling of All the President's Men, the tone in The Final Days is rather somber, as things fall apart in the presidency.

The Secret Man: The Story of Watergate's Deep Throat by Bob Woodward

Upon Mark Felt's announcement that he was Deep Throat, Bob Woodward published the book he had prepared for publication upon the death or public confession of his secret source.
